Ashwath Kattes. Have you seen them in your neighbourhood?
‘Ashwath’ is the Sanskrit word for the Peepal (Ficus religiosa) tree, and ‘Katte’ is the Kannada word for the platform built around it. To a passer-by, it might just look like a place to sit under a shady tree. But look closer and you will find elders reading the newspaper, women praying, vendors resting , neighbours chatting...
It's one of our most multifaceted public spaces--'hidden in plain sight' urban commons that has ecological, spiritual, cultural, and social value! Authors Kiran Keswani and Suresh Bhagavatula set out to understand these everyday spaces, and the result is their book, The City Beneath the Tree.
Come join me as I moderate a Round table Conversation with the authors and a wonderful circle of voices ( Ravikanth G, Chandrima Home, Pooja Ugrani, Deepa Managooli, Vena Kapoor) to explore how culture, design and socio-ecological interactions all together shape these special public spaces in Bengaluru.
When? Nov 15 (Sunday), 11 AM to 12:30 PM Where? Turning Pages, Jakkur
