There is an unending debate on the north-south claims on government money. Every election cycle unmistakably sees a discussion on freebies and corruption. The states and the union continue to have multiple disagreements concerning the Goods and Services Tax. And while Indian cities contribute to the bulk of its GDP, they are perennially begging for money.

Discussions around the topics listed above are now commonplace, yet they often take place in the absence of a grasp on public finance concepts, even though this discipline provides a framework to understand the role of a government in the economy.

That’s where Fiscal Fables comes in. It demystifies India’s public finances to a lay audience and explains public finance concepts with the help of relatable stories and examples, to make this vital knowledge accessible to a general interest reader.

Fiscal Fables was written by Pranay Kotasthane and Sarthak Pradhan.

This event will consist of the book launch of Fiscal Fables, followed by a discussion with Pranay and Sarthak about the book, the idea behind it, the process and research that went into it and what people should look forward to while reading it.

Mothers Won’t Drown explores the physical forces at play in the act of birthing.

Imagining the fluid-based relationship between a fetus and the pregnant mother, the performer explores the in-between spaces of compassion, sickness, nourishment, resistance, play, and ecstasy that characterise the world of the natal. Inspired by the essay The Great Mother by Adriana Cavarero, the work uses yarn and the act of knitting as metaphors for the umbilical root, while pointing at the disruptive potential of the vaginal rupture from which a new being is born.

Who marks our roots? Who decides our thresholds? How do we overcome our boundaries, our borders? These are the questions ‘Mothers Won’t Drown’ intends to trigger. Using the yarn and knitting as metaphors for the umbilical root, this performance explores the slippery terrain between the fetus and the pregnant mother, and invites its audience to wonder, why the world has more territories but not enough playgrounds.

About the Artists

Meghna Bhardwaj and Denis Barwa began their collaboration at Frankfurt Lab 2025, at the end of which they performed a duet choreographed by Meghna titled Mothers Won’t Drown. The work originates in Meghna’s choreographic research Yarning that she began in the year 2021. Currently, Meghna and Denis continue to work on the solo version of the piece through a distance collaboration between Italy and India. So far, they have shared the work-in-progress at OddBird Theatre and Khuli Khirkee Mela, New Delhi.

B.CLIP is a one-of-a-kind, comprehensive civic leadership programme designed to build a pool of informed, capable civic leaders who can contribute to ward-level governance and drive meaningful change in Bengaluru.

The four-month intensive programme combines classroom learning with hands-on, on-ground projects in participants’ own localities. Through sessions on public policy, municipal administration, political and electoral dynamics, and other aspects of urban governance, participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to understand civic challenges and work towards practical solutions.

The Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) is inviting scholars, students, researchers, environmentalists and members of the public to a special talk, “𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐫 – 𝐀𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤,” by noted environmental journalist, researcher, and author 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐣 𝐒𝐞𝐤𝐡𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚.

The proposed mega infrastructure project in Great Nicobar has generated significant debate around development, ecological conservation, biodiversity and the future of one of India’s most environmentally sensitive island ecosystems. Drawing on his extensive research and reporting on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Pankaj Sekhsaria will examine the transformations unfolding in Great Nicobar and the wider environmental and developmental questions surrounding the project.

Pankaj Sekhsaria is the recipient of the Prem Bhatia Environment Journalism Award 2026 for his research and reporting on the Great Nicobar mega infrastructure project. He is also the author and editor of seven books on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reflecting decades of engagement with the region. The session will be chaired by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟.
